Midweek Boogaloo – Amos Milburn

The first in an occasional series documenting tunes, tracks and clips that swish, swing and have a rythm section that thumps, bumps and bounces like those pesky picnic grabbing ants from Tom and Jerry.

How snappy would it be to walk up to some dusty ol’ pub piano, crack your knuckles and hammer out the honky tonk like this….

Amos Milburn – Down The Road Apiece

‘Down The Road Apiece’ was reworked some years later by the Stones, who really don’t make a bad shout of it – hear here.

And for all out rockingness….

Down the Road Apiece (Stones version) was the first track on my very first podcast. I listen to it at least once a month – great tune.

  2. Roman Empress Says:

I was watching some amazing little richard and jerry lee old crackly footage yesterday, really manic stuff, especially the latter. The crowd are going nuts for both artists, and of course they are!
Whole lotta shaking going on. How many boogy tunes are a version of that?

  3. Planet Mondo Says:

I’ll lend that an ear while I’m waiting for ROMO 17.. I’ve got another version of DTA on a creaky ol tape from the 80s somewhere/Godknowswhere – which may possibly be better than the Stones and Amos’s version.

RE There’s a mind blowing Little Richards bio (by Charles White). that will fry your Brian it’s such a shocker. I’ll be loading up tracks by LR and JLL in future and perhaps even the Mae West version of Whole Lotta Shaking

  4. 56 Special Says:

Really unusual point about that Amos video; instead of a drummer, he has some fella stirring a big pot of stew. Presumably so the band can have some tea after the gig..

Love that Stones version too. Nice one.

  5. Axe Victim Says:

Aye, as a scruffy herbert of a kid I used to love hanging about outside t’ White Hart pub in W7 on Friday and Saturday nights listening to boogie woogie tunes cooked up by the several of the highly bevied up old timers. It takes me back, just for a while…

  6. Planet Mondo Says:

    56 and AV
Glad it hit the spot for you both -there’ll be more woogie winners to come including a couple of great guitar based ones you two will go cross eyed over.

  7. Cocktails Says:

I see you’ve been busy while I’ve been away PM – there’s a lot to catch up on here! Great Amos Milburn tracks there (although the bloke leaning against the piano in the clip is more than a little distracting…)
