Countdown to Christmas Pt 1 – Have Yourself a Punky Little Christmas

Posted in christmas, countdown to christmas, Punk, Sex Pistols, The Damned on December 10, 2007 by planetmondo

I’ve been off sick today, am feeling a bit grot’ and grog’ – so will be keeping it short and simple. Here’s a couple of Christmas crackers to kick off the Christmas countdown, and continue the Punk them from last Fridays posting.
PS -Why not have a peep at my other Christmas themed post here too

The Damned – There Ain’t no Sanity Clause.mp3

A snow storming Christmas anthem from The Damned, sleigh bells, “ho ho ho’s” , a verse about each member of the band, and a sing a long backing vocals with the phrase

Here comes uncle Nick
Let’s give him some stick

You’d never have got this from The Clash, but you would from the Sex Pistols (well, Cook and Jones anyway) who teamed up with Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy formed The Greedies – short for Greedy Bastards and cracked out a festive fretfest called ‘A Merry Jingle’.

Funk Friday – When Punk Went Funky

Posted in blondie, Funky Friday, new wave, Sex Pistols on December 7, 2007 by planetmondo

Every Friday is Funky Friday on Planet Mondo and this Friday brings you two New Wave nuggets with videos and downloads for both tracks.

Given that the Sex Pistols coverered tracks by the The Who and Small Faces, Matlock’s Mod roots and Lydon’s love of Reggae, it was invevitable there would be some funky fallout following the Punk explosion. (An early Pistols gig was billed as Machine Bubble Disco, and the Seditionaries Vive le Rock (version 2) T shirts featured a scrawled “Punk Rock Disco” slogan). Disco and Punk were both driven by a sweaty energy, manic dance routines and a highly stylised dress code as escapism from the bleak prospects of ‘No Future’, ‘dead end’ jobs and long term unemployment – unheard of for teenagers in the 50’s and 60’s.

For all it’s trademark jerky, angular clangings, New Wave recycled the uptempo high-hats and handclaps of Disco and Funk, with the dress down charity shop trimmings of Punk – PIL, The Clash, XTC, The Slits, Talking Heads, Eno and Byrne, Blondie, Adam and the Ants, The Police, Ian Dury and the Blockheads all dabbled with Dance or Dub rythms and Rock riffing.

And after visiting New York, the Professor Pat Pending of Punk Malcom McLaren was instrumental in bringing Hip Hop, scratching and break dancing to the UK (and as a consequence the rest of the world) in 1982 following an appearance on ‘The Tube’ and the release of his single ‘Buffalo Girls’ (McLaren also put World music on world stage on his 1983 album ‘Duck Rock’)

Two years later Lydon and Afrika Bambaataa put their heavily coiffeured heads together, mergered Rock, Rap and the omnipresent 80’s terror of nuclear armageddon to create ‘World Destruction’ the first ‘Rapcore’ track pre dating Run DMC and The Beastie Boys by two years.

Sex Pistols Are Coming !!!!!

Posted in Punk, rock, Sex Pistols on September 18, 2007 by planetmondo

So the Sex Pistols are back !

They could reform every year and roll round the world as far I’m concerned. How often do you get to see real life legends, who’ve turned the music, fashion, media, and design industries up side down. Whose look, sound and attitude is still referenced as undiluted source material today.

Walk down almost any high Street and you’ll see the shadow of the Sex Pistols somewhere.

I doubt I’ll get tickets.I don’t care. It’s just a buzz to know they’re buzzing for it too.

I’m planning to upload a super rare bootleg next month Party Till You Puke – which is the complete and studio quality demo’s for the NMTB sessions including the only studio recording of Sid playing bass (on Submission).

So if you’ve got a Pistols buzz, treat yourself with some of these goodies

Ignore the ninnies who say the Sex Pistols can’t play, and blast this in their ears.

Sex Pistols poster – offline
A high Res version of the first ever Sex Pistols poster (as pictured above, but much larger), given away in the German music magazine Bravo.

Or why not have a peep at an earlier pistols blog of mine about at a Spanish Punk band’s cover of NMTB

Then have a nosey at this Filth and the Fury trailer and see why the tickets will probably sell out in less time than it takes to watch this clip

Following on from my last Punk themed post here’s a couple more leopard skin and safety pin links

I found a great set of Punk pics while browsing Flickr recently.

There’s loads of memorabilia and some fantastically candid home photos of the Bromley Contingent, Chrissie Hynde, Judy Nylon and others taken by Simon Barker (legendary for always wearing an Anarchy shirt) around 76/77. After a bit of research it turns out these photos and more appear in a 9 part Summer of Hate feature which is here at 3AM (you have to browse parts 1 – 9 via page 9)

And on a more local level, another highly recommended website is Southend Punk – You don’t have to have been a punk or even lived in Southend to enjoy this site. It’s such a great document of what was happening in one area of Britain and all over the UK before, during and after the Punk big bang – I guarantee that if you’ve got any sort of interest in the late 70’s early 80’s Punk & New Wave period – Southend Punk will up your High Street.

You could even check out some of my photos of The Damned, and Lords of the New Church live at Crocs in 1983 at Southend Punk – Or have a peep at my Punk Top 50 which appears in the playlist section, while you’re there.

Randomiser number 2 – Never Mind The Balearics

Every time an unexpected winner, a long lost favourite or previously unheard nugget shuffles it’s way into play on my mp3 player. I log it in the blog. This time its;

Los Punkrockers – Pretty Vacant.mp3

Imagine if Manuel from Fawlty Towers had gone giddy with the Punky spirit of 77, jacked in his job at the hotel and started a Spanish punk band (perhaps called The Siberian Hamsters) that only played Sex Pistols songs. It wouldn’t sound unlike Los Punkrockers.

This cover of Pretty Vacant comes from the album Exitos de Sex Pistols. Which is a complete track for track, straight ahead (no flamenco guitars, castanets or handclaps) rework of The Sex Pistols NMTB.

I haven’t found much ‘net news about the band or the album, but the general theory seems to be that it was recorded somewhere in Spain around 1978. I’m guessing that the line up may have included Juanny rotten, and Seneor Vicous (who replaced Glen Matador),

Theres some tip top ‘lost in translation’ lyrics on it

Pretty Vacant ” we’re so pretty oh so pretty … wee Will Carter”

Bodies “she was girl from Bimingham – her name was Colin, childhood express”

It’s like Channel 9 version of punk, sort of Holidays in the Scorchio

What a gem – Fill your Doc Martens while you can.

Thanks to Agent Paul Cooper giving me the tip off about this peachy piece of punk obscurity.
